Most of the time, a mare is a female horse over the age of three, and a filly is a female horse age three and younger. However, in Thoroughbred horse racing, a mare is defined as a female horse more than four years old; in harness racing a mare is a female horse more than three years old. The word can also be used for other female equine animals, particularly mules and zebras, though a female donkey is usually called a "jenny." A broodmare is a mare used for breeding. A horse's female parent is known as its dam. An adult male horse is called a stallion, or, if castrated, a gelding. We had a Plaomino stud growing up and he was bred to a bay and they threw a dunn, he was bred to a chestnut and they threw a palomino together. It really all depends on the genes. It is kind of like paints, not ALL throw color and then some throw too much. You can't really "pick" what color baby you want. All you can do is hope for the best. And growing up I was always told breeding 2 palominos was risky. I'm not sure how accurate that is but the reasoning I got was because they could throw a Cremello. Good Luck! Horses generally have fantastic memories and remember their training for years. But they do need to be reminded that the same pattern of stimulius and response holds. So the best start is a three step program. 1) See how she does on the ground with the lead line. Catch her, lead her around on a walk and remind her about staying with you, stopping when you stop, going when you go, standing still when you ask and backing up on request. Correct her as needed. 2) See how she does on the lunge line. She may need to be reminded that the lunge is not a place to blow off steam, but is a place to obey commands.
